Profile

Casper Versluis (b. 1983) lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although he began intentionally producing art only a few years ago, his creative journey has long been shaped by self-taught methods and independent exploration.

His practice is deeply informed by years of involvement in social upliftment initiatives, which instilled in him a strong connection to the ecology of the human condition and, in particular, to the principle of civic consciousness: the belief that everyone shares responsibility for shaping a just and compassionate society. Drawing inspiration from the many manifestations of the human form, he seeks to foster a sense of belonging, accountability, and stewardship within society.

Through his quest to translate form into meaning, he draws on visual strategies of multiple strands of abstraction, not as stylistic ends in themselves, but as languages through which the human condition can be expressed. Each artistic movement contributes a distinct lens, allowing him to explore different dimensions of the human form and experience.

Central to his material process is the discipline of working without interruption, cutting and folding each sculpture from a single sheet of steel into form, or drawing without lifting the pen. This practice reflects his conviction that life, like faith, is a continuous act of devotion and that the journey of becoming is always inseparably linked to its beginning.

His sculptures are typically created from sheet steel and mounted on cast-concrete bases. Using automotive paint applied through various layered techniques, he creates vibrant contrasts and textured surfaces. He also extends this visual language into two dimensions, producing relief paintings on wooden panels using the same methods.
